How To Have Delicious Homemade Food Easily

In this day and age, it is very hard to provide your family with bountifulharvesting.comwonderful home-baked foods. We are too inclined to just buy the box with the ingredients in it already. We simply bring the box home, add the wet stuff and make the cake, or cookies and biscuits that way.

Busy lifestyles and no time have given mass food producers an edge on making your life easier by allowing you to buy the goods already mixed and ready to add the wet stuff. However, these companies have to also add much more to your food that you don’t want or need. Preservatives.

Here is a great way to have that great homemade taste, not to mention the benefits of no preservatives and other garbage that is in these processed boxes of premixed foods.

Whatever your family enjoys, whether it be cookies, cakes, biscuits or any other baked items, you can now pre-mix them in assembly line fashion in plastic zip lock bags and store them in your freezer or cupboard until the need for them arises. The plus side is you can even mix the wet ingredients right in the bag. Saving money and not having to do endless dishes is a plus.

Preservatives in the processed foods are put in there to last years and years. You don’t need them in your food. Many preservatives are bad and some of them are linked to diseases. So let’s jump right in and start making your pre-mixes so when you get the urge for chocolate chip cookies or warm biscuits for your morning breakfast, you will find that you do have the time to do it. They are already done. Just add the wet stuff.

What You Need

For whatever you want to pre-mix

Gallon Zip Lock

4 to 6 times the ingredients of your choice.

Recipes That Are Yummy

In each bag label, the amount of wet ingredients needed in each bag and the cooking directions and yields. I found that once a month making these ahead of time will save you tons of time and money for the whole month. Also buying in bulk and when on sale is a plus. So make use of those sales on sugar and flour. Buy a 25lb bag of sugar and flour to make many ahead of time dishes. Biscuits are my favorite and I have a great recipe for spoon biscuits for you to enjoy.

These recipes are one batch at a time. so get your bags and markers together and spoon into each bag the ingredients listed on the recipes. When you are done you will have prepared many batches that can be taken out and made whenever you need them. All you will need to add is the wet ingredients. You have to do that anyway with the store bought mixes so this is no more time consuming than the box.

You can do this with any recipe, With the yeast ingredient, I would just add that when you are ready to make it. Yeast has a tendency to break down and it expires quite fast so if you are planning to make a recipe with yeast, leave it out until you are actually ready to make it or if you are making them within one month, go ahead and add it. Sooooooo

Yeast added only if you are using the recipe mix within one month.

Did You Know?

Or did you ever notice the tiny bag of noodles in a box of hamburger Helper? It’s crazy what we pay for this. You can make 4 to 6 pre-mixes of this from one 16oz bag of noodles. That is a tremendous saving considering we get this on sale. I have found sales of these noodles for $.99 and it has amazed me that I pay so much for a mix with that small amount of noodles in the package. So I started making my own.  I even adjusted the recipe to make larger amounts. If you have unexpected company for dinner, no problem, just take 2 bags and make them.

Buy In Bulk

Also, when making multiple bags of mixes that require spices and additives. Don’t buy the small jars of spices.  You can buy these in bulk to save money. So check out the price of bulk spices to save even more money.

Ready…Set….Let’s Go

Spoon Biscuitsspoon biscuits

In each bag Put……

2 cups flour

1 Tbsp Baking Powder

1/2 tsp Salt

On each bag write this……before filling

3 Tbsp Oil of your choice

1 Egg

3/4 cup Milk

Preheat oven to 450 degrees

Combine Oil, Egg and Milk and mix together.

Drop a scant 1/4 cup at a time on a baking sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown. The cooking time depends on the amount dropped on the baking sheet per biscuit.

Yields 10-12

Chocolate Chip Cookies (original Toll House Recipe)

In each bag put this……

2 1/4 cups Flour

1 tsp baking Soda

1 tsp Salt

3/4 cup Sugar

3/4 cup packed Brown Sugar.        ( This can be added when you are ready to cook or mix with sugar to help prevent hardening. You can also put bag in microwave for 15 to 20 seconds to soften it if it becomes hard.)

2 cups Semi-Sweet morsels.    ( This is a 12oz bag. If you are making many, consider buying in bulk.)

1 cup chopped Nuts.   (Your choice. The original recipe calls for Walnuts. You can substitute any nut for variety like Macadamia or almonds. Any nut that you like is okay.)

On the bag write this……….before filling

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

1 cup (2 sticks) soft Butter

1 tsp Vanilla Extract

2 Eggs

Mix together wet ingredients and drop by spoonfuls on a baking sheet. Cook for 9-11 minutes or until golden brown.

Yield 5 dozen cookies

This recipe can also be made all together at one time and rolled into a roll. Wrap and freeze for up to two months in the freezer or one week in the fridge. How much did you pay for that roll of pre-made cookies that you buy just to unwrap and slice into cookies? I bet it didn’t make 5 dozen and I bet it didn’t taste as good or have as many chips or nuts as yours did. And the cost savings? Amazing just by doing it yourself.

So if you are planning to make them and prefer them this way which is much easier, I would go with the rolled dough and freeze it.  Shape the roll about the same size as the store ones. You may have to make a larger roll or two smaller ones, whichever you prefer….

Also, a big cost saving here. This is instant pancake mix in a bag. Don’t buy that pre-mix complete pancake mix. Make it yourself. Tastes so much better….

In the bag put this…….keep in mind this serving will serve six. If you want to adjust the amount or simply freeze leftover pancakes, it’s your choice. I personally would rather freeze the leftovers, if they last long enough!

3 cups Flour

3 Tbsp Sugar

1 Tbsp Baking Powder

1 tsp Baking Soda

1 tsp salt

On the bag write this…..Easier if done before filling it.

3 1/3 cups Milk

2 Eggs

1/3 cup Oil your choice

Melted butter for frying.

Heat large pan or griddle until water drops sizzle when dropped on the surface. Brush griddle with butter and cook until done. Flipping when bubbles are starting to pop.  Makes 24 pancakes when using 1/3 cup per pancake.

Homemade Hamburger Helper

This recipe makes a much larger amount than the box so be prepared to be surprised at the amount and taste. This is licking the pan stuff, no kidding.

In the bag put this….

2 cups Elbow Macaroni

1 Tbsp Corn Starch

1 Tbsp Chili Powder

2 tsp Garlic Powder

1 tsp Sugar

1 tsp Salt

3/4 tsp Paprika

1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper

Pinch of Crushed Red Pepper Flakes

On the bag write this….Before filling

1 1/2 pounds Ground Beef

2 1/2 Cups Milk

1 1/2 Cups Hot Water

2 Cups Shredded Cheese of your choice

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.  Cook Ground Beef until it is browned  and no longer pink. Drain fat from pan. Add the pasta, milk, water and spices and stir to combine. Bring to a boil. turn down heat  to simmer. Cover and cook for 10-12 minutes, Add the cheese and stir into the mixture. When cheese is melted and sauce is thickened, it is ready to serve.

Yields 6 Servings

Variations to this mix are huge. Experiment with adding fresh vegetables or change noodle types.

Different cheeses also can be added. Sauces can be changed. So many different ways to make this dish.

Homemade Hot Chocolate

This recipe can be made in one large Gallon size Zip Loc bag.  You will use this same bag multiple times for however many cups at a time you are making.

1 cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder

2/3 cup Fine Sugar

1/2 tsp Salt

Add to bag and mix.

On the bag write this….

1 Heaping Tbsp to 1 cup Hot Milk

Yield 12 cups. You can double or triple this recipe

Homemade Hot Chocolate (No Milk Required, Milk in the mix)

In the bag (Gallon size) put this…..

3 cups Nonfat Dry Milk Powder

2/3 cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder

1/8 tsp Salt

1 cup sugar

If nonfat dry milk is not fine, grind in grinder or blender to make finer. You can also buy very fine Nonfat Dry Milk.

This recipe can be adjusted to your taste.

On the bag write……

1/4 cup mix to 1 cup boiling water. Stir to mix.

If adding Peppermint or Marshmallows to a mix, increase to 1/3 cup mix. You may need to add more or less depending on how much you added to it. Start with 1/3 cup and add more if needed. Adding these extra ingredients will not increase your yield, it will increase the amount needed per cup of Boiling Water.

Once you have the perfect mix, write on your bag how much to use per cup so you don’t have to figure it out in future cups. Makes life a little easier.

You can add a bag of Mini Marshmallows to this recipe

You can add 1 cup of finely crushed Peppermint candy. (Use Candy Canes if around Christmas)

Yield  16 servings at 124 calories per 1 cup serving.

Now You Know The Basic

You can do this with any mix that you normally purchase from the store. I hope you will consider making your own to save money and think about this. You will be able to pronounce all the ingredients in your bag. Can you do the same with the ingredients in your box foods that are probably sitting in your cupboard?

The list is endless. Now you can make these mixes all the time for anything you love. Here are some examples of my faves.

Lemon Poppy Seed Muffins

Multi-Grain Pancakes

Macadamia Cookies

Butter Cookies

Muffins, Cakes, and Cookies of any kind can be done this way. Get busy and try some. I know you will agree with me. This time savings alone is worth it. Also, the money savings is a big plus. The big Plus is the ingredients are fresh and no preservatives. That has been the subject of many health concerns lately as more and more preservatives are found to cause many health issues. Natural preservatives are fine. That crap in the box is not, Do your research, this stuff is no good for you.
Just some of the health issues linked to preservatives. The list is much larger. These are the most common

The big issue here is you don’t need those preservatives in your body. Those unwanted preservatives are in box food simply because they want that box to be viable for a year or more on the shelf.

Another concern of mine is GMO. There are a lot of companies that prepare these mixes with GMO food products. This is my opinion and the opinion of millions of other health-concerned citizens that GMO products are not healthy.  To even better your ingredients that you put in your bags of mixes, try to make sure that all ingredients are GMO-free. You can do this with little effort. You won’t always have to buy organic to achieve this. Many products do not contain GMO.  Here is a small list of Companies that use GMO food in their products. I hope to inform you so that you can make smart choices when choosing foods to put in yours and your family’s belly. Make the right choice, the healthy choice.
