I know, besides a skinny girl named Olive Oyl. Lol He got muscles to die for. Did you know that spinach will make you big and strong? Yep it will. Not as instantly like Popeye, but it will increase your strength. Here is what’s in it.
Eating spinach will provide an excellent source of vitamin K, vitamin A (in the form of carotenoids), manganese, folate, magnesium, iron, copper, calcium, potassium, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin E, and vitamin C. While also being an excellent source of dietary fiber, phosphorus, vitamin B1, zinc, protein, and choline.
Spinach if one of the Worlds Healthiest Food
One of the benefits of spinach is that this green leafy plant is extremely available all over the world. With its amazing abundant nutrient profile, it appears to be an amazing super food, it’s so easy to find in the market or easy to grow. Best of all, it’s affordable.
This food is very versatile . It can be eaten raw in a salad and is so much more nutritious than lettuce. Or it can be cooked and eaten as a dish on its own or added to soups, stews and other dishes. If you boil it, use less water to help it get soft faster to avoid losing the nutrients.
Spinach is jam packed with flavonoids, which act as antioxidants that protect the body from free radicals. Through research it has discovered at least 13 different flavonoid compounds that act as anti-cancer substances. These nutrients offer so much in the way of disease protection. Sadly, this cannot be obtained by simply taking vitamins.
Spinach is Heart Healthy. Vitamins C and A which are identified as antioxidants, These help reduce free radical amounts in the body. These antioxidants help cholesterol from oxidizing. Also the folate found in spinach is good for a healthy cardiovascular system, as well as magnesium that helps to lower blood pressure.
Gastrointestinal systems benefit from this by leaps and bounds. Spinach guards your system with beta caratene and vitamin C. They work to protect your colon from harmful effects of free radicals. Also DNA damage and mutations from free radicals can be protected by the folate that is present in spinach.
The iron mineral is great for hemoglobin, iron is a component of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen to all body cells, it’s needed for good energy.
Wow what a lot can be said for eating spinach and green leafy vegetables.
When I was young
I didn’t care if Popeye ate it, I still didn’t want it. I also didn’t want broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, green beans. basically anything that was good for you.
That’s the times when mom would take me to the closet and administer a tbsp of Cod Liver Oil. There were no vitamins back then, no gummy vites to give our bodies what we didn’t eat.
After extensive research, I have found that even the vitamins do not absorb as good as the real deal. So how do we get our little ones to eat this stuff? There is bar none a better way to get the benefits of spinach other than eating the plant. The vitamins in it are good, but there is more than just vitamins in this green stuff. There are anti-oxidants and properties that can help you live a longer life. Vitamin supplement ok, but your really missing out by not eating it.
I realize that my mom did give me the benefits of spinach even though I didn’t eat it, so I thought. She had ways that would give me the benefits of the green stuff without me knowing I was getting it. Besides the Cod Liver Oil, YUCKKK. She put that stuff in soups and stews and spaghetti, All of the stuff I did not like were processed in the kitchenaid and made in the forms of soup thickeners, gravy and sauces.
Smart lady? No, I say LIAR. She told me I didn’t have to eat it if I didn’t like it since making me sit at the dinner table until I finished my asparagus proved not to work. I sat there till midnight. She grew tired and let me go to bed.
Frustrated and weary, she decided she would figure something out to get that stuff in me. I only know this information because my Aunt Lydia sent me a bunch of letters that my mom wrote my Grandma. My Aunt asked me what I wanted of Grandmas things when she passed. I asked for the letters and pictures of my mom and some of Grandmas canning supplies.
I never knew that my mom did this. I am happy to have the letters because my mother passed away when I was 15 and I never really knew a lot of this stuff. I read about her in the letters she wrote to my Grandmother.
The amazing thing about now
I absolutely love spinach and all green vegetables. Could it be because she did this? I don’t know. I believe our tastes change when we get older and things that repulsed us back when we were young now are tasty. I can’t even remember when things started to change as far as starting to like veggies, it was probably gradual. I only noticed when I reflected on my childhood after the birth of my twins.
When my kids were young I didn’t know how to get the good stuff in them. I didn’t have the letters until they were grown, but I did find something they liked, spinach dip. Amazing huh? They loved it and I couldn’t make enough. They ate it all the time. I always added way more spinach than the recipe called for and less of the fattening stuff. I kinda made me own recipe. (popeye pun intended) They ate it on crackers, bread, toast, what ever. It was good tasting and they got their spinach.
When I made pot roast, I sprinkled a little bit of brown sugar on the carrots and they came out tasting so sweet, my kids would fight over them so I always made more carrots in the roast than potatoes and onions.
The time is now to incorporate whatever you can to get these wonderful veggies in them now. Stop the fast food syndrome and start putting more greens in their bodies. They will benefit in leaps and bounds. Fast food will only make them fat and unhealthy. We, as moms have to take charge and make sure our kids have all the health benefits they can possibly have. Popping a gummy vitamin in their mouths may make you feel better about giving them their vitamins, but there is more than vitamins in this stuff. Seriously, stop the fast food.
Some ways to get them to eat spinach
This may not be just for kids, this could be for you also, if you dislike green vegetables, you can try these ways also.
- Grind vegetables in a Kitchenaid. <<<<< click to be taken to my review on Kitchenaids. You can put the ground veggies in mashed potatoes and soups and stews
- Cook to a mash and make gravy and sauces. Although cooking for long periods of time takes some of the nutrients out but if that is the only way you can do it, fine, it will still work.
- Buy a juicer. You can click on the link here for a good juicer.
- Make your kids sit at the dinner table till they eat. Trust me, this way does not work, especially if you have a dog nearby that actually likes vegetables, or a stubborn child like I was.
